While the answer to that question changes a little depending on whether we are talking about freebase or salt base, there is a consensus that high quality base isn’t just simply the physical quality of the fluid.
The manufacturing process also comes into play big time. As a matter of fact, the manufacturing process is one of the make or break points in determining whether a base is “good” or not. Another make or break point is analysis–safety is and always must be paramount for ANY base to be considered “good”.
Another is equipment, know-how, and ingredients. Without the best tools, materials, and knowledge, you will only make mediocre base, at best. And we don’t just say that either. For instance, if you have top quality ingredients, but average equipment, you may lose the advantage of those top quality ingredients because inferior equipment can’t process them to maximum effect. A LOT of things go into what makes a “good” base.
Some would say pricing, packaging, delivery system, and customer service should also be considered in what makes a base “good”. We agree.

When stored in a cool, dark, and dry place, VG has a shelf life of about one year; PG, two years. If you want longer-term storage, we suggest you store your nicotine base in a refrigerator or freezer.
Please keep in mind facts like, for instance, VG is hygroscopic, it will absorb water from the humidity in the air if it isn’t sealed well.
So the storage area really needs to be “dry”. UV light also creates problems, so the storage area really needs to be “dark”, etc.
As long as you adhere to the rules, you can store your VG and PG for a very long time, without any drop in quality. If ever in doubt, just Google “storing PG” and “storing VG” separately and go from there.
The physical quality of VG and PG directly affects your health. There are numerous grades of PG and VG, with pharmaceutical grade being the best in terms of human health.
There are certain companies that feel food-grade PG and VG are acceptable; we disagree. Your lungs, your metabolism, your general biology may react adversely.

Why?
Because there are certain potential health issues involved. You could be allergic to PG and/or VG, directly. Indirectly, you could be allergic to, say, coconut oil or palm oil; then VG could prove to be a health problem (yes, this is a low possibility, but we consider all our clients, not just a certain group).
Diabetic vapers can also experience problems, in addition to other vaper groups. Our point is simple: the quality of VG and PG is not just “important”, it is of paramount significance and you need to make sure you only use the very best—like we do.
The question is better phrased like so: How does the difference between nicotine salts and freebase nicotine affect me?
Classic eliquid is made with freebase nicotine. When we say “classic”, we mean the eliquid you normally use in any sub-ohm atomizer. When you use nicotine salts instead of freebase nicotine to make eliquid, the vape becomes very different.
You can easily vape a 50mg/ml eliquid made with nicotine salts without even the slightest cough (see the pod paragraph below). Nicotine salts have lower alkalinity due to benzoic acid, and THAT allows you to vape liquids with very high nicotine levels with a very nice throat hit.
Mixing eliquid with nicotine salts makes for a smoother vape with a pronounced increase in flavor intensity.
Originally nicotine salts were crafted for pod vapes, due to these devices having comparatively-low eliquid chamber volumes and power. Since nicotine salts are MUCH more concentrated than freebase nicotine, ejuice makers started using nicotine salts for pod vaping purposes.
What would happen if you vaped eliquid made with nicotine salts in a “normal” sub-ohm atomizer at a high wattage? Let’s answer it this way: sub-ohm tank and mod owners CAN vape eliquid made with nicotine salts, but the content needs to be lower than average. A 3-5mg/ml eliquid made with nicotine salts would be suitable for a sub-ohm device.
Higher amounts could result in a nicotine buzz, as the amount of vapor produced by a high-wattage mod would deliver a lot of nicotine, which is a stimulant.

Safety has to come first with any endeavor and it’s no different when handling pure nicotine. This is especially important with higher nicotine strengths, which can be extremely discomforting and may lead to hospitalization. The fact is pure nicotine can be dangerous if not handled with care. Nicotine is a psychoactive substance; it activates certain receptors in the brain and stimulates or soothes the nervous system. In high doses it impairs the nervous system, affecting the functions of biological organisms.
You would do well to treat pure nicotine with the respect it deserves. It should go without saying but keep nicotine away from pregnant women, those with allergies, children, legally incompetent adults, animals, and plants. If using a freezer for storage, make sure there are no food items in the freezer along with the nicotine. If in doubt about anything, always consultant a physician.
Inspect the nicotine visually
First things first; put on your gloves and goggles, then check to make sure your nicotine bottle is not leaking. Check the cap and outside of the bottle for any punctures or signs of physical damage. If you do find the bottle to be leaking, transfer the nicotine to a good bottle and clean up any spilled nicotine with a wet and warm cloth.
Use gloves and goggles and handle near a sink
You should always use gloves and goggles when making liquid in general, not just when working with liquid nicotine. The gloves should preferably cover the area up to at least the middle of your forearm. Also, make sure there is always a sink nearby. If there is a spill and you get nicotine on your skin, wash the area right away. If you start feeling sick or notice symptoms like an upset stomach, stomach pains, dizziness, nausea, fast heartbeat, or irregular heartbeat, seek immediate medical help.
Have dedicated bottles and equipment
Do NOT use what you can find in your house. Invest in separate bottles and equipment. If you have to use a different bottle than what the nicotine came in, make sure the new bottle is right for nicotine. Bottles made of dark-colored glass or opaque HDPE (#2) plastic are good. In terms of equipment, put together a DIY mixing kit dedicated to making DIY liquid and nothing else. Keep track of which syringes, containers, and bottles come in contact with nicotine. Doing so will help prevent cross-contamination.
Mix in an appropriate room/area on stable surfaces
Wherever you mix your juice, make sure it is safe and quiet. It helps to make sure you are working in a distraction-free environment where outside events will not disturb you needlessly. Check and be sure your nicotine and equipment are placed on a flat and stable surface. This will reduce the chance of nicotine spills, improve the accuracy of your mix and protect you against potential health issues.
Keep gloves and goggles on at ALL times
Do NOT work on ANYTHING related to mixing, even if only for a very short time, without gloves and goggles. Remove gloves and goggles ONLY after you are COMPLETELY done mixing AND have cleaned up spillage AND have stored away your equipment and nicotine. Always make sure to wash your gloves and goggles with warm water before storing them away.
